Every year, FIRST® LEGO® League releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic and includes three parts: Robot Games, a Research Project, and Core Values. Teams of up to ten children, with at least two adult coaches, participate in the Challenge by building and programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game) and developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project), guided by the FIRST® Core Values. The 2019-2020 FIRST® LEGO® Challenge is City ShaperSM. More information about the challenge is available at the following links:

Roland Park students in fourth through eighth grades are eligible to apply for the Robotics Team. A maximum of twenty students who qualify will be invited to participate on one of two Roland Park Robotics teams.

Practices will begin on 9/16. The teams will meet weekly before school hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 2019 through early December 2020 with plans to compete in a practice tournament on 11/9/19 and an official FIRST® LEGO® League Regional qualifying tournament on 12/14/19.

Student registration fees are $163.28 per installment due in September and November. Students who qualify to join the team will be expected to register in order to attend practices beginning the week of September 16, 2019 and concluding the week of December 9, 2020.  Fees will cover costs for student participation in weekly practices, teacher coaching fees, materials fees, and team registration at practice and qualifying regional tournaments. Should any team advance to the state competition or beyond, additional fees will apply.

All students who are invited to join the Robotics team and their families will be asked to sign a letter of commitment indicating their pledge to follow team policies and procedures regarding attendance, homework completion, behavior consistent with FIRST® LEGO® League Core Values, timely payment, and parent commitment to a minimum number of volunteer hours to support their child’s team. Note: a minimum of 20 participants must be registered to offer this program.
