Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program that challenges students to apply their knowledge and imagination to find solutions to an identified problem in a team-based setting. The Odyssey of the Mind program encourages students to think outside of the box and incorporate the conventional skills they are learning in school in an unconventional way. Students learn to tap into their inner creativity and apply it to their STEM education to find innovative solutions to the challenges they select. The experience allows students to perform, not just the sciences, but the arts as well – whether it be set-building, costume-making, creating props, acting, singing, or playing an instrument. They get to explore their potential, build self-confidence, and create new friendships in a fun and stimulating environment.

Odyssey of the Mind is open to interested students in 4th-8th grades who wish to apply. Students who qualify will be invited to participate in teams directed by Mrs. Michele Martinez and her parent helpers. The teams will meet for one hour weekly before school hours on either Wednesday or Thursday mornings with plans to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind Regional Competition expected to be held in February 2020.

Student registration fees will be billed in two installments and will cover costs for weekly practices, site registration fees, teacher coaching fees, materials fees, and team registration at the regional tournament. Should any individual team advance to the state competition or beyond, additional fees will apply. All students who are invited to join an Odyssey of the Mind team and their families will be asked to sign a letter of commitment indicating their pledge to follow team policies and procedures regarding attendance, homework completion, behavior, timely payment, and parent commitment to a minimum number of volunteer hours to support their child’s team. Note: Students who commit to join the team are expected to fulfill their obligations as changes to the team roster are not permitted and may risk disqualifying the rest of the team from competition.
